What Does Your Mission Statement Say About You?

There are two different type of verification badges you can request for your Facebook page, both are designed to let people know that your Facebook page or profile is authentic.

What is a mission statement?

Your mission statement is only a few lines long but it is a paragraph which clearly and accurately describes your company and what it does. If it’s good it will sum up your company and your values, if it’s great it will be inspirational. A bad mission statement will make your business ideals unclear so it’s important to put time and thought into this. You want it to say who you are and where you are headed, no more, no less. Overcomplicating it can make the message confusing.

Why is a mission statement important?

A mission statement is important as it transparently states what your company represents. As with a brand and a webpage, a mission statement is an important part of marketing as it may be used over and over again in marketing campaigns. It is valuable for both your customers and your staff as it shows the direction you are headed in.

What is a good mission statement? I have added some examples below for you.

Google – To organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

We know from google this is exactly what they do. Google is the leading internet search engine used across the world and the company is huge which means that have the resources to research, store and organise information.

Tesla – To accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

Tesla has been working on bringing sustainable transport to us for years and they are the market leaders in electric cars.

eBay – At eBay, our mission is to provide a global online marketplace where practically anyone can trade practically anything, enabling economic opportunity around the world.

Once again this mission statement is bang on point, wherever you are in the world, if you have access to a computer and a bank account then you have access to eBay as a selling and buying portal.

As you can see from the examples above these statements clearly explain the companies aims and ideals. They are strong without too much information which what you should aim for with your mission statement.

It is possible to have a mission statement with even less information. Take for example ‘Ted – Spreading Ideas’ This is so simple but they do exactly what they say on the tin, they share ideas. They host talks from industry professionals on a variety of subjects from many different backgrounds and share them on various online platforms.

I couldn’t write a blog post without including our own mission statement which is ‘To deliver individual design and marketing for businesses of all shapes and sizes across the globe allowing their interaction with the world to be more professional and successful.’

Whatever you decide to write as your mission statement, make sure it reflects the values of your company, make sure it’s clear, and make sure it is memorable.
