Is it time for a website redesign?

December 10, 2020
Tom Lyons

A well-designed website is likely to last 3 to 7 years, but that isn’t the only reason for a redesign. Your decision should also depend on whether or not it is delivering real business results.

Why should your website be up to date?

As your business evolves, so should your website. It needs to represent your business as it is now, not 5 years ago. The design, layout and messaging all need to be carefully thought out. The digital world is fast-paced, and if you are slow, your competitors will overtake you.

Use your website to stay ahead.

It is essential to research and consider what your competitors are doing. To be a market leader, you have to stay ahead of the competition, and your website is the first place people will look when they are searching online for your product or services. If your website isn’t as good as your competitors, it’s time to redesign it.

How easy is it to navigate your website?

Put yourself in your customer’s shoes. What do they need to see when they reach your website? A website only has a few seconds to make a great impression, and if a customer can’t immediately see what they are looking for, they will look elsewhere. Don’t make it hard for your visitors to find the information they need. The content, navigation, and calls to action need to be designed with the visitor in mind.

Optimising your website for mobile

If your website hasn’t been updated for a few years, there is a chance that it isn’t optimised to work on mobile devices.

Did you know that nearly 60% of all online searches are now via mobile devices?

Your website must look great and work well when it’s viewed on a mobile.

Is it relevant to your current products or services?

Have your products and services changed? If so then does your website adequately represent these? If not, why not? There is no point in launching new products and not telling anyone. Book that website update asap!

New website functionality

If you are adding a new function to your website, this is a great time to take a look at the overall layout of the website. Will the new feature fit straight into the current design, or will it look like a new spoiler on an old banger? A new feature will often mean you are looking to drive new traffic to the website, let’s make sure they get that great first impression!

Do you need to redesign your website?

Your website is more important than ever. It represents your business 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and it is often the first place potential clients will look.

The question shouldn’t be “How much is this going to cost?” the question is “How much am I going to lose if I don’t update my website?”

Day 1 of Brighton SEO Takeaway

I'm travelling back from Brighton SEO day 1, and I've just heard a talk from John Muller of Google. This information is straight from the horse's mouth. What he said aligns closely with what I've been emphasising over the past few years: Google considers a myriad of...
